Another smartphone for the selfie generation!
Following the bandwagon of dual camera smartphones, Samsung has also announced two new smartphones, the A8 and A8 Plus. However, both smartphones feature dual front camera unit and a single rear camera unit, instead of dual rear camera setup. Samsung isn’t the first to implement this new feature, we have seen a similar setup in a recently released Huawei Nova 2S. It seems Samsung was a bit late in announcing the new smartphones. Let’s see what this device holds it in for other users, or if its just for the new selfie generation!
The new Samsung Galaxy A8 and A8 Plus follow the new basic design model of recent Samsung devices, namely the latest S series of smartphones. Both features infinity display design with 18.5:9 aspect ratio and curved glass. The resolution of both devices is 1080×2220. The Samsung A8 is the smaller one of the two, with a 5.6-inch screen and the A8 plus, the bigger one featuring a 6-inch screen. These large-screen models may not be right for some, but for the users who prefer large screen phones, these phones are great.
There are two cameras at the front which sit idly behind the screen and doesn’t stand out much, making the device look much premium. At the rear, we have a single camera unit, with a fingerprint sensor just below the bottom of the camera. As usual, there are volume rockers on the left side and a power button on the right. It also supports quick charging abilities over USB type C. You can expect quality build quality from Samsung as their recent phones have been quite sturdy and premium looking. In fact, these latest A series phones look much more like the S series devices, rather than the previous generation of A series phones.
Both Samsung devices feature custom Exynos 7885 Octa chipset bundled with Octa-Core processor clocked at 2×2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 & 6×1.6 GHz Cortex-A53 respectively. The GPU unit installed is Mali-G71. Both smartphones will be offered in two variants, 64 GB, 6 GB RAM, and 32 GB, 4 GB RAM. There is also support for expandable memory via MicroSD card up to 256 GB.
Talking about the camera, we have a 16 MP, f/1.7, phase detection autofocus, LED flash for the rear unit, which captures images of good quality. However you are not here for that, aren’t you? The front camera unit features dual 16 MP & 8 MP cameras with f/1.9. The front cameras are great for selfies, including portrait modes and live focus feature. The Live Focus feature lets you chose whether the background is in focus or blurred to a soft bokeh effect. The phone can switch between cameras in real time to provide desired effect.
Aside from the camera, you can expect decently and lag-free performance from the octa-core processor. The battery capacities are 3,000mAh for the Samsung A8 and 3,500mAh for the larger Samsung A8 plus model.
This is the first front dual camera from Samsung, and depending on its success we can expect newer Samsung models to have the similar setup. We don’t know exact details about the pricing, but one can expect about Rs 35000/- for the A8 and Rs 40000/- for the A8 plus. If you are a selfie fan, then you should keep a close look out on this one, or can get the Huawei Nova 2S.
