Sony has announced the official Android upgrade policy for its series of mid-level and entry-level smartphones. The Japanese giant reveals that all “premium set of devices” in the Xperia smartphone series will be the latest Android updates for two years after launch. On the other hand, Android phones for testing and hardware compatibility might be the mid-range and entry-level Xperia phones.

With access to Sony’s official Android upgrade policy, Xperiablog boasts that its flagship smartphone offers the best bet to ensure the latest Android updates. While the policy may seem a bit vague to other smartphones in the Xperia group, Sony mentions that “it will not upgrade to a mid-range device or entry level if the test is the exact benchmarks we have and we see that the devices are not able to provide a stable user experience”. Users of Sony Xperia smartphones can check the latest software updates by entering the IMEI here.
Apart from that, the report also presents Sony’s Mobile security update software that includes Android security patches and updates from third-party related vendors, and Xperia specific patches. The company states that these security updates may be released in the form of firmware upgrades or full Android upgrades, depending on the timing and the situation. “Because the security update program is available for our entire premium line, select medium-range devices – timing and different phase by the carrier,” Sony said in an official press release.
Finally, Sony also published the list of Xperia smartphones that will be receiving the Meltdown and Spectre patches. Here are some of the devices; Xperia XA1 Plus, Xperia XZ, Xperia XA1 Ultra, Xperia L1, Xperia XA1, Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra, Xperia L2, Xperia XZ1, Xperia X, Xperia X Compact, Xperia XZ1 Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZs, and Xperia X Performance. According to Sony Mobile, the Android security patch will be dated 2018-01-05.
