Google deletes 29 malicious apps on the Android Play Store that promised to improve user photos by sending malicious device content and redirecting the same users to phishing websites and more. One of the many actions taken by the Mountain View house to reduce the risks related to the installation of apps regularly placed in the official store.
According to the Trend Micro security company, the various photo apps identified – defined as “Beauty Camera” – have achieved considerable success among Android users, collecting millions of downloads over time, especially in countries such as Asia and India.
Among the examples mentioned by Trend Micro, we find the package com.beauty.camera.project.cloud which, once launched for the first time, will create a shortcut by hiding it from the list of applications and thus making it difficult to detect and uninstall it.
While unlocking the screen, the source continues, this type of app was able to show malicious and fraudulent full-screen ads (for example, a fake prize contest was mentioned that at the third attempt allowed the user to win by requesting later detailed information), automatically download malicious content and more. None of these apps, of course, had provided any indication as to their true nature in the description on the Play Store.
Further investigations have also allowed identifying a considerable number of apps that, once convinced the user to upload the image to the server to improve the quality through the application of filters, sent a false request for updating in 9 different languages. The same uploaded photos could also be collected by the authors of the app to be used – in all probability – for malicious purposes such as the creation of false profiles on social networks.
