NASA plans on launching a new spacecraft in august to touch the Sun. The spacecraft just got its light weight heat shield which is made of two layers of carbon-carbon composite which surrounds a thick foam core. The shield weighs about 160 pounds. The shield will be used to protect the spacecraft which was dubbed the Parker Solar Probe from the intense temperatures which it will face near the Sun.

The shield will reach temperatures of about 2500 degrees Fahrenheit while the spacecraft will remain at about 85 degrees Fahrenheit. It does this by protecting anything within its shadow. This is a very relevant technology advancement.
