The WhatsApp team is preparing to introduce a new change to the notification system of this popular instant messaging service.
This is the support to a feature from Google with Android 9 Pie and provides a new way of displaying images and stickers in the drop-down menu with notifications.
When you receive an image on WhatsApp on a device with Android 9 Pie on board, the notification will expand and collapse to show the picture while the rest of the text messages will continue to be displayed above or below it.
This feature works for static images but not for GIF or video, which can not be previewed in the notification.
If the message concerns a group, the image is still embedded in the messages in the expanded notification, but when it is compressed, it moves to the right, so that the group icon is shown next to it.
This new feature has been implemented at the moment in the beta channel (here you will find the latest release on APK Mirror), but it seems that on the smartphones with the previous versions of the OS no longer show the preview of the images in the notifications. Probably there is still something to fix before implementing it in the stable version of WhatsApp.
