At a launch event in Shanghai , Xiaomi launched the all amped up upgrade to their Mi Mix 2 , which was lauded by everyone for its bold design. The New Mi Mix 2s following its predecessor adopts the same design while at the same time making upgrades which make it look much more 2018. The device starts at 3299 yuan which comes around to about $524 USD for the 6GB RAM and 64 gigs of storage , 3599 yuan ( $572 USD) for 6GB RAM and 128 gigs of storage and the top variant has 8GB of RAM and 256 gigs of internals at 3999 yuan i.e $635 US dollars. Mi Mix 2s will run on Android Oreo 8.0 out of the box with MIUI on top.
The Looks and Display
The phone touts a nearly bezle-less 5.99 inch LCD screen with a FHD+ display and a resolution of 1080 x 2160 which looks great but still leaves you yearning for an OLED display. But at this price point who can complain. The device just like many of its compatriots has a 18:9 ratio display and with a great screen to body ratio of 81.9%. All of which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
On the back of the device you’ll be greeted by slightly curved glasses and a very familiar vertical dual camera setup of which personally i am not a big fan. Even though the Mi Mix 2s pulls of the vertical setup look beautifully with the help of the gold trimming around the camera housing but it still makes you feel that it lacks originality .
On the bottom there is a USB C port for charging and as usual no headphone Jack.
In the specs department Xiaomi went all out and Mi Mix 2s comes with all the latest components. The octa-core device’s upper core’s are clocked at 2.8 GHz and the other 4 at 1.8 GHz. Powered by Snapdragons latest processor the snapdragon 845 and the Adreno 630 GPU it can tackle anything you can throw at it with a 3400 mAh battery to support it . The battery can be topped up really fast as it supports Quick Charge 3.0 and it also supports Qi wireless charging.
On the front or to be more precise on the bottom front of the device there’s a 5 MP front facing camera with (f/2.0, 1.4 µm) . The front cam though performs well is nothing to write home about and while the positioning of the camera is weird and can make taking selfies a bit tricky it is understandable.
While on the back it has a dual camera set up with the primary one being a wide angel 12mp (f/1.8, 1/2.55″, 1.4 µm) with OIS and the secondary is a 12mp (f/2.4, 1/2.9″, 1.0 µm) telephoto lens. Mi mix 2s got a DXOMARK rating of 97 which is on par with the Iphone X (97) , only 1 point behind the Google Pixel (98) and 2 points behind the Samsung Galaxy S9 (99). The Mi Mix 2s might just be one of the best devices out there right now . It is a combined package which is both aesthetically pleasing and a performance beast. The device is currently only being released in china and will soon be released in other markets where Xiaomi has a presence.
